Felt Tissue Holder

Vertically Striped Tissue Holder
This was the first sewing project I completed after getting my first sewing machine.  I had never used a sewing machine before, so this quick project was perfect for getting to know how the machine works and trying out the different stitches available on the machine.  At the time, I had limited material and supplies and was anxious to get started sewing!  Luckily, I had some left over felt that I had used on another (non-sewing) project and some thread to start.  I found this project by googling "beginner sewing projects".  I carry one of these around in all my bags and I have them available in my classroom to grab and go when we're in a hurry!  Enjoy!

 Materials:
  • Felt (about 6" x 7" - but you might have to change the measurements depending on how many tissues you want to store)
  • Travel facial tissues
  • Coordinating thread
  • Sewing machine (you can hand sew this project, too)
  • Fabric cutting scissors
  • Quilting pins
  • Buttons or other extras to decorate

 Directions:
  1.  Cut your felt to size.  For a solid color tissue holder: cut your fabric about 6" x 7" For a vertically striped tissue holder: cut one color felt 6" x 7" and the other color felt any width you'd like by 7".  For a horizontally striped tissue holder:  cut one color felt 5" x 6" and the other color felt 3" x 6".  That way, the two felt pieces will overlap 1/2 inch on each side making the completed piece a total of 6" x 7".

***If you're creating a vertically or horizontally striped tissue holder, sew your felt pieces together.  If you're creating the horizontally striped tissue holder, cut the smaller piece of felt equally down the middle so 1 1/2 inch of that color felt is on each side of the tissue opening.***

    The hardest part is finished!!!

  2. Fold the 6" x 7" piece of felt so that the two ends meet in the middle.   Use quilting pins to hold the felt down so that when you go to sew it, it will be sewn in the correct place.

Note: Using pins to hold down your fabric is tedious, but the outcome is worth it.  Your projects will look much more professional if your fabric is held in place while you're sewing.  Just remember to remove the pins as you sew because if you don't you might break a needle!

  3.  Sew!  Place the pinned felt piece under the foot of your sewing machine and start sewing!  This is your chance to use whichever stitch you desire.  I recommend using a straight stitch on the ends of your tissue holder and using a unique stitch to sew together the two different color felt pieces (if you're making a vertically or horizontally striped tissue holder.
    .
  4.  Voila!  Your tissue holder is complete.  Insert travel tissues (don't forget to take them out of the plastic they came in!) and sew on decorative buttons, etc. if you desire.  Enjoy!
